English cider and English style cider

English style cider is the most known and globally most common type of cider. At the same time it is also the broadest style of cider that is hard to generally describe. Partly this is because of poor legal definition of cider in British law - the law defines cider as fermented drink from apple juice with alcohol level up to 8.2 %. The law however does not specify if 100% apple juice has to be used to start with. The CAMRA association stepped in with their own definition of real cider which is very strict. However that unfortunately does not mean that they would make industrial cider disappear. And industrial cider is what makes English cider reputation much worse and why many people think that Frech cidre is superior to English cider.

To make matters worse, some of the Czech industrial cider (that in reality has nothing to do with England) implies to have originated in England in most of their commercials. So the unjust bad reputation of English cider is much worse in The Czech Republic than elsewhere.

On the positive side, English cider has huge variety. After filtering out the industrial cider, there is still plenty of cider kinds, ways of fermenting, tastes and countries that this style of cider comes from. In England there are several subtypes of cider such as scrumpy or still ciders as well as ciders ranging from very sweet to extremely dry tastes. Some cider makers even prefer to spell cider as cyder.

Most of cider is cuveé from several kinds of apples, but there are also cider that are proudly made just from one kind of apple, sometimes form one orchard, one keg or in extreme cases from one tree.

Most of Czech cider production also comes into this category. The same goes for Irish cider and more importantly also American cider. In the last years American English style cider has begun bigger then English English cider in terms of quantity as well as variety and innovation. When The Wall Street Journal starts to write about The Cider Industry you know it has become serious.

Also most of home made cider falls into this category. Most of home cider makers do not aim to produce Sidra natural (at least intentionally) or apfelwein and keeving process based French style cidre is usually beyond their means. With the home makers included, English style cider encompasses truly thousands of tastes.
